Easy Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe

I’ve really struggled to find a good southern pecan pie recipe in the past but this one is such an easy recipe – so simple and comes out beautifully. It is quite like a traditional pecan pie but has that chocolate kick and is truly the best chocolate pecan pie we’ve tried. Top it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and it’s better than any classic pecan pie recipe!

The other secret to this homemade pecan pie recipe is that I cheat a bit by using a pastry pie shell. Let me tell you what, I know my strengths and buying pastry shells is one of them *grin*. You could of course make a homemade pie crust, but not having to makes this such an easy holiday dessert. As if you aren’t already busy enough with Thanksgiving dinner, having this easy to make perfect pecan pie will make things that much easier.

I shared with you a few weeks ago my recipes for an Creamy Pumpkin Pie (also made with a pastry shell) and these two pies would be a fantastic addition to your Thanksgiving meal and would also make lovely holiday desserts to bring to gatherings.

Also, I might add that while the addition of chocolate here is optional, this chocolate version is so fantastic and a great way to take your pecan pie game to the next level.

Ingredients for making Southern Chocolate Pecan Pie

  • 3 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup light corn syrup or dark corn syrup (Karo Syrup)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips (milk chocolate chips work as well)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked pastry shell

Simple and delicious! This is my favorite kind of recipe. It’s also quite dependable and predictable, which is always appreciated when you are making a recipe in a pinch.

If you are looking for a yummy pecan recipe, this is one that can’t be beat. I also love this as a Thanksgiving dessert, especially to bring to family gatherings because while others might bring a pumpkin pie or even a pecan pie – no one ever brings a chocolate pecan pie.

You could garnish the top of the pie with whole pecans. When you serve individual slices you’ll want to put a dollop of whipped cream in the center of the pie slice, and you could top that with a sprig of mint. Since the secret ingredient to this pie is chocolate, it’s perfect for any chocolate lover.

Recipe notes:

My hubby loves to drizzle maple syrup on his slice of pie

Just like with regular pecan pie, you’ll want to cover this with aluminum foil, plastic wrap or store in an airtight container.

FAQs

What is pecan pie filling made of? ›

Pecan pie is a delightful concoction of pecan nuts mixed with a rich, caramelly filling made from eggs, butter, corn syrup, and sugar. The earliest pecan pie can be traced all the way back to the late 1800s, but it really peaked in the early 20th century when Karo™ syrup printed a pecan pie recipe on its bottles.

What makes a pecan pie not set up? ›

Here's the thing to remember: If you're filling hasn't set, it means the bottom of the pie crust isn't fully cooked, either. You can prevent the outer crust from further darkening (or even burning) by covering it with aluminum foil or -- more attractively -- with what's known as a pie ring or shield.

Why is my pecan pie hard? ›

Bake the pie too long and the filling will become rock hard after cooling. Don't bake the pie long enough and the filling will ooze all over the place and the pie will fall apart. There are three okay ways to kind-of tell when your pecan pie is done but only ONE foolproof way to tell when your pecan pie is done.

Should pecan pie be jiggly when it comes out of the oven? ›

You will know your pecan pie is done when you can shake it gently and it is not overly jiggly. If it jiggles a lot when shaking, continue cooking until the center is more set, 5-10 more minutes. Allow pie to cool completely for several hours before cutting and serving. Or refrigerate for 1-3 days, until ready to serve.

Why is my pecan pie not done in the middle? ›

The center jiggles more than it's supposed to. Why didn't the filling set properly? If your pecan pie is still a little soupy, it simply means you need to bake it more. The center or filling of a pecan pie needs time to thicken and set properly.

Why is my homemade pecan pie runny? ›

A pecan pie is essentially a custard pie, and a liquid center is almost always the result of underbaking. The Karo Classic Pecan Pie recipe calls for baking the pie for 60 to 70 minutes at 350 degrees. In some ovens, however, the pie can take 75 minutes or more.

What can I substitute for corn syrup in pecan pie? ›

For every one cup of corn syrup that the recipe calls for, use one cup of maple syrup instead. The great thing about maple syrup is it has some nutritional benefits. Maple syrup contains antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, such as Vitamin B6, calcium, niacin, potassium, and riboflavin.

Can I leave my pecan pie out overnight? ›

Pecan pies can stay on the counter for up to two hours before they need to be refrigerated, according to the FDA. After two hours at room temperature, your food is at risk for harmful bacteria growth. The FDA recommends you store foods at or below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C).

Why does my pecan pie always boil over? ›

BE CAREFUL not to beat air into the filling after adding the eggs; that will cause it to boil over in the oven.

Why does my pecan pie looks foamy? ›

Tips for The Best Pecan Pie:

Over beating the filling will cause it to become foamy and will make the filling look cloudy. Keep an eye on the crust as it bakes. Typically it will need to be covered within about 20 minutes of baking. You can make pecan pie ahead of time and freeze them easily.

Can you over bake a pecan pie? ›

Cook pecan pie too much and it'll crack and be dry. Underbake it and it will be watery and runny. You want to cook pecan pie to an internal temperature of 200°F. Use a digital thermometer to make this easy.

Why is my pecan pie fluffy? ›

Sugar pie fillings won't always look perfectly firm when they are still hot in the oven. You will notice that the edges of the filling, just along the crust, will be a little bit puffy — like a soufflé — even when the interior still appears slightly wet and jiggly. This is a good indicator that your pie is ready.

Why did my chocolate pie not set? ›

This can happen for several reasons: if the cooking process was rushed, if the filling wasn't carefully watched and stirred frequently, the filling was overcooked, the stovetop heat was too high, or if the pie isn't given enough time to chill. Any ingredient substitutions could also result in a runny chocolate pie.

Can you overcook a pecan pie? ›

The edges should be set but the center should wobble a bit, kind of like gelatin. Cook pecan pie too much and it'll crack and be dry. Underbake it and it will be watery and runny. You want to cook pecan pie to an internal temperature of 200°F.

What should a pie look like when it's done? ›

The outer edges of the pie should be firm while the center will be a little jiggly, but not sloshy or unsteady. As the old adage goes, "It needs to jiggle like Jell-O but not wiggle like a wave." If the entire pie is wobbly, continue baking. Use a piecrust shield if it's browning too fast.

How do I make sure my pie is done? ›

You don't really know how well the pie is done until you cut a piece of the pie once it has cooled. To be safe, the rule is to bake the pie at 425 degrees for 15 minutes at first, then lower the temperature to 375 degrees and bake until the pie is done.
