Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Since I was a child, I have already a vision of becoming a great captain of a ship one day. A lot of courses are also great but my strong yearning for my ambition is really on top of my list. Considering nowadays, getting an employment is hard, and choosing the right course is a must. So I stick to my ambition and my chosen course. I also choose this course to travel the world for free. And not to mention, this course is easier compare to the other courses which will give you hard time doing difficult school works. Plus the this course will land you a stable job where you earns a higher salary. Today seafarers are consider rich because of the higher income that they received.
About my college education: I used everything I have learned. Everything is enjoyable, specially physical education subjects, where you go swimming, rowing, paddling, and sailing and solving navigational problems.
Exams are easy, just take time to read your books and study hard, for sure you will pass the exams. In our class no ones failed the exams, glad to say that. Since I was in first year up to the graduation day, my classmates and batch-mates are still there so I would say that no one tried to shift to another course. And I am happy for that.
The only boring thing is that when you have no friends. It was interesting when the professor was sharing us his experiences when he was on board, trying to give us a little clue what life awaits us on board.
Traits and attitude you need are hard work, perseverance, patience.
My current job: I am a Licensed 3rd mate.
I am on-board right now as an OS, but am on promotion to be an officer. We handle the goods that were imported and exported of different countries.
Am I using what I learned in college: Discipline. I guess that is applicable to all but that is the most important thing that I learned from college. And off course the skills like swimming, solving navigational problems like calculating distance, time speed, plotting, maritime knowledges like maritime laws, maritime cultures and proper usage of navigational equipments, seamanship works and many more. Those are the things that the school will give and train you which is very essential once you get on-board.
How long did it take to find a job: I am so proud that I was a company scholar. I already had a company even while I was still schooling. So I did not look for job, I was already scheduled for training after graduation. After my training comes my duty to the company base and was deployed on-board for my actual job.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes. This is a very recommended course in terms of employment opportunities. Filipino seafarers are highly considered by international shipping agencies for their competence. It's an in-demand job today.
Well for salary it's a bit higher than other job,s not to mention the chance of seeing beautiful places around the world. A cadet can earns Php20,000 - Php 25,000 per month depending on the ships' company. The higher the rank, the higher is the salary. Php 500,000 per month is for chief officers and chief engineers. So who wouldn't want that? It is really recommended.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Study your lesson so you will get your diploma. Once graduated, you'll get a job for sure because seafaring is an in-demand job today where international shipping agencies is highly considering Filipino seafarers for their traits and competencies. Be brave and have faith in yourself and remember the schools' core values- discipline. It's a must so where ever you will be assign, you'll be safe and sound.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: My father is also a seafarer so he chose this course for me. I personally liked it to because based on my fathers' situation, we are well of and we have everything that we want. He also used to tell and brag us about the different places that he have visited for being a seafarer. So those stories serves as an inspiration for me wanting this course.
About my college education: The study in this school is not boring. I liked the lesson very much because I see my father as an inspiration. The subject most difficult for me was math. I liked the p.e. because I have high grades in swimming. I learn many things especially seaman work like making different kinds of ropes, plotting, and we have real practical in our p.e. Outside the school in the open sea for boat rowing and boat sailing.
The exams are difficult sometimes. Sometimes easy. So far I did not fail my subject.
I think being study hard is important in this course because you can graduate. You don't need to be so intelligent as long as you study your lesson then it will make you graduate.
My current job: I am a deck cadet in Cargo Safeway Inc. and I am on board now.
Am I using what I learned in college: Many. The lesson in our school is very applicable here like plotting, how to use radar, how to solve the distance of the ship, time also and speed. Swimming also and we have drilling every week for emergency.
How long did it take to find a job: It almost 8 months.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes. I recommend it. Big money and you work abroad. You also visit beautiful places all over the world.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Follow your dreams. Try and try until you succeed. And goodluck!

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: 3 Reasons:
1st - Peer Pressure. Everyone just kept talking about the course so I kept it into consideration.
2nd - Choice. I begun to admire the status of the products. So, it becomes my personal choice after Chemical Engineering.
3rd. Practicability - Sometimes personal choice isn't good enough to choose. We need to put in mind, where and who am I after I graduated?
About my college education: I am a cadet of a Norwegian Scholarship, thus, I am not following the normal 3 - 1 scheme (3 years in college and 1 year apprenticeship). I am in a 2 - 1 - 1 scheme which means I spent 2 years in college 1 year in an international vessel and 1 year again in school for the BS degree as required by CHED. At first it is difficult to maintain both physical training and academics. But, as days went by things were just becoming routines.
For regular students, Discipline is the thing you need the most. What is taught in school is of a great help on board a vessel as per my experience. You don't need to be a Magna Cum Laude, you don't need to memorize a Fibonacci Sequence just to be a world-class seafarer. Perseverance, Leadership, Education, Discipline, Godliness, Equality as stated in the school's core values when attained by one's self, success is just by his hand.
My current job: Now, I am reviewing for my board exam.
During my apprenticeship, I worked as a Deck Cadet on board an international vessel. I assisted my officers in their daily works. For Deck Works I do painting and other routine works. But for the rest of my stay for 12 months I was mostly assigned in works of an officer. Because that's what I'm trained to be. I earned about 564 dollars a month as an apprentice.
Am I using what I learned in college: Yes. Most of it. Especially those are taught during simulation classes about the rules of the road to avoid collision. I've used it to the maximum during duties where I am assigned to navigate the ship.
How long did it take to find a job: I was already ensured for a job since when I was in first year college. I was chosen by a company.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Employment Opportunities. YES. Even you're not a scholar, the international maritime industry prefers Filipinos because our hard work on board their vessels. If not mistaken, 35,000 Filipinos every year are hired on board vessels of international registry.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Don't just think of a course because it is where most of your friends are. Don't just think of going to John B. Lacson and take up BSMT just because rumors are overwhelming about us.
Do Think of a course you like or you will like but is practicable enough to make you someone you deserve in the future.
In here you don't need to be an Einstein. In BSMT you just need to be a normal person that has the passion for a maritime-related field of work.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Choosing right course is very difficult. I enrolled bs nursing in one of top universities in manila because I want to become a doctor someday. However my tatay (father) talked to me that he cant afford the tuition fees miscellanoeus fees etc. Because my father is just a farmer and fisherman, he chose and I decided to enroll bs marine transportation or in other words seafaring course. This course is always in demand and it help alots of hopeless young youth. I'm saying that you can study this course with low tuition fees, very easy to study the major subjects, and after school you can work at once.
About my college education: I've learned a lot most especially maritime business.
All of my major subjects like oceanography meteorology etc are difficult.
Most useful is navigation.
Exams are not difficult. Of course if you study well there's no difficulties.
Self discipline and time management there's a lot time to consume in order to achieve the diploma.
My current job: I'm a second mate officer, I'm working as navigator, safety security officer, pharmacist, ship doctor, accountant.. I'm working at bulk cargo ships and it goes to Japan, Australia, Canada.
Am I using what I learned in college: Of course I've learned how to handle the ship smoothly and how to operate the ship in environmental way.
How long did it take to find a job: Just a couple of months. I worked as apprentice for 18 months..
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Now a days seafaring is very in demand. In this career the job will find you. As you know Philippines is the world seafaring capital of the world.
As a starter you will earn 300 usd per month but if you will become captain you will be earning 10,000 usd.
Indeed it is very interesting because you're not just travelling for free and earning very easy. But you will be apart of one of the bridge of the success of our nation.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Bs marine transportation is not a difficult course to pass. Yes it requires money in order to enroll the course. But for now many shipping agencies have scholarships and upon graduation the scholars will automatically work on shipping agencies

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Because I wanted to see the world. When you are a seaman you will have a benefit of seeing the world for free.
About my college education: When taking up a BS in Marine Transportation, you must be ready to be away from your family. There are few students who quit, not because they don't like the course, but because of some financial problems. Being an apprentice is enjoyable but there are times you want to be home.
My current job: I am unemployed right now, I quit working from my shipping company for about 2 years already.
I am planning to have a simple business using my hard earned money when I was on board.
Am I using what I learned in college: All that I learned from my college life was very useful. Training from school is the one that bring me an employment. Apprentice training is also knowledgeable for me to pass the exam when you are applying for a job.
How long did it take to find a job: When I finished my apprentice, I worked in an inter island shipping company for 2 years. After that I was employed by an international shipping company for 5 years.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes, being a seaman, you are earning enough for a living. The salary of a seaman is very good, because you are earning more than an ordinary employee.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Be prepared to leave your family for a year or months because it is the nature of being a seaman. Sacrifices when you are away from home but remember that what you are doing is for the sake of your love ones.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: I chose this course for it is my dream to be a Captain someday, to man my own ship. For I believed that I can really handle this kind of profession, and aside of travelling the world for free and earn a big salary, it is also a test of my independence, if I am independent enough to be far from my family and loved ones. And for the reason that I want to help my family. I want to give them a better life that they deserves to have.
About my college education: I learned a lot if things in this course. Mathematics is always present. And also the most important is English. For we are working abroad so we need to speak English at all time. I think the most difficult subject is Navigation. A lot of things you need to study. In short it is the art and science of navigating a ship safely. How can you determine your position if the equipment break down? In that case you can apply what you learned in that subject through using celestial bodies like stars planets moon etc for solving your position. It was really hard I can say, but I passed it as long as you have the courage and believe in your self.
My current job: I am a fresh graduate.
But I am now taking my Cadetship training to get on board the ship in my company, which is a placement that I pass during my school in John.B Lacson.
Am I using what I learned in college: In my case the subjects and the lessons that I have learned during my college are the subjects that my company teaching on us right now. And it makes it easy to do my training.
How long did it take to find a job: Before I graduated I have already a company to work for.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: In terms of salary, a fresh graduate, what we call a Cadet, will earned 20k+ a month. But if you have the rank, let say you are a Captain you will earned half a million a month.
And on-board the ship all is free, so you can get your salary in full.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Focus, that the only thing you need to do to surpass this kind of profession. Love your course and have a determination.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Among the booming industries today in the Philippines came from the Seafarers legion. So choosing this course is the wisest thing I have ever done. My older brother chose this course also because of it's reputation of getting a well endowed future. During 2008 I have already considered choosing this course because based to what I have seen with my neighbors who are seafarers, they have a very comfortable life. They're earning a lot I would suspect because of the luxury that they are enjoying not to mention the status it give in the name of society- chief mate, captains, 2nd mate, high ranking professionals in the society. So after graduation in high school, that was 2009 I enrolled my self to this course. Even though my parents can't afford to give me this course, I strive hard to just to be enrolled to this. I have a determination and I want this course. I want to be successful in this field and I want to called a captain of a ship someday.
About my college education: During my school here, JBLFMU-Arevalo teaches me to become more versatile in everything. Discipline is a core value. I have learned how to swim, crawl stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, and some swimming saving technique. I have learned how to maneuver and navigate ship, how to use the navigational equipment, how to solve navigational problems, time, distance and speed, how to measure the drops, familiarization of the different part and function of the ship, and many other.
My most favorite subject is Seamanship and Navigation because it helped me understand how to solve different actual problems that can be encountered during work. For some it is hard because it's more of calculation but for me I like it. I love solving problems like math.
I have learned how to socialized with my classmate. I also learned how to survive in case of emergency on board so that's the most important thing that this school have teaches me.
The exams are ok. Same with other universities I guess. Study so you pass because if not, then you'll have to embrace the failing grades. In my case I studied hard to pass those exams.
To become successful in this field, one must have disciplined and to accept the challenge of becoming a seafarer. Prayer is important because when your on-board, it is very lonely.
My current job: I am seafarer. I am a deck cadet.
Am I using what I learned in college: We have different practical, survival, basic safety, fire fighting and many more, so all of that are applicable today for my current job.
How long did it take to find a job: 5 months.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes. I recommend it in terms of opportunities because you can have a job with in 5 months.
Salary depends on the company. International companies pay higher compared to domestic one. A fresh graduate/deck cadet like me can earn Php 20-25,000. Pay gets higher once you take the board exam for higher rank as officer in charge.
A more experienced employee/officer in charge for us can earn Php 50,000 - 500,000. That's something that other courses can't provide. So BS Marine Transportation is recommended!
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Remember all the things that is being teaches to you during there in the university because all of that you will need once you are here in the actual work. Be brave! Grupo!

About my college education: We have to balance leadership training and academics while living on a semi-military life style. We live inside barracks five days a week and are allowed to go ashore from Friday to Sunday.
Our 2-1-1 curriculum allows us to learn the basic theories about seafaring on the first two years. On the third year, we train onboard international vessels. There, we practice the theories we learned from school at the same time enhance our practical ship management skills. It is enjoyable in a way that it enables us to see the world for free. I've been to Vatican, Chile, China, Capetown and experienced things I might not have seen living a pure civilian life.
My current job: I am currently a graduating cadet. In six months, I hope that I'll be able to pass my board and become a licensed 3rd Officer.
Am I using what I learned in college: Yes, it is our edge. Every knowledge learned is essential onboard.
How long did it take to find a job: All of us are already employed before graduation. We are already receiving bonus and support from our sponsor companies prior to graduation. They even refund whatever we spent to enroll in the academy. As for me, I am sponsored by NYK-Ship Management.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes, I recommend seafaring career to others. There is a high employment demand specially we are the top producer of seafarers in the world. The experience cannot be bought nor can be paid by salary. Seeing different culture of the world is the best thing you can experience. taste different foods, see different tourist spots, learn languages. The average salary of a third officer, lowest rank of officers, is 150,000 pesos.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Dreaming to sail on a large vessel, travel the world for free, to get along with other nationalities and most especially this is the way I could help my parents from poverty.
About my college education: I learned how to vessel works and how it can manage to go from one place to another safely. For me Physics was the most difficult. Useful things I learned is on how to prepare your self for your future as seafarer.
Exams are not difficult if you will study and listened to your instructors. One main reason why students are eager to learn and most of them pass the examinations, not only because of the instructors but the subject itself.
One thing I learned from this profession, when you became a seafarer you need not to be smart, you need not to be good in English as long as you know how to deal with other people then you will reach your dream.
My current job: Seafarer
Am I using what I learned in college: To be nice to other people. Accept the reality of life. And Safety is the first Priority
How long did it take to find a job: I was accepted in one of the biggest shipping lines in the world before I graduated.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Being a Seafarer and working on-board is not that easy. Apply what you have Learned in school because I know since 1st year to 3rd year they're preparing you already to become competent seafarers and to get ready with your self to face the hardest part of your life.
Homesick is one of the biggest problem that you will encounter but when time passed you will say that you have the best job in the world.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Knowing that it has a good pay once you get promoted or being a licensed officer.
About my college education: It was quite difficult but interesting. Just imagine you will be sailing on seven seas for free someday.
What you need to succeed is:
First thing is that your dedication to study.
Second is your patience for every task or involvement as a cadet and lastly your determination to succeed on your chosen career.
As what they always say, NO PAIN NO GLORY but of course never forget to ask for enlightenment from up above.
My current job: Right now I am working as office cadet as part of my on the job training before going onboard.
My designation is mainly on visa applications in different embassies that's why I learned a lot especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships.
Am I using what I learned in college: What I've exactly used is the ability to adapt the environment that I've been moving in and out then everything followed.
How long did it take to find a job: Not more that 5 months.
I have my brother as my backer in our company that is why.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes!
Philippines is widely known for it's Maritime Sustainability of producing almost 70% of World's Seamen population so it's not the question of Job-assurance..It's all about perseverance.
Salary Level is not a problem in this career so long as you show good records in your company you are in good track.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: It may not be as easy but remember three things.
When you dream, don't just dream.
WORK FOR IT. (dreamer)
And when you started to believe in your capacities as an individual with a goal in life you pursue what you've commenced. (believer)

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: I have chosen this course because of the probability of a good scholarship and an ensured employment.
About my college education: Marine transportation is a course for those who someday would want to be captains of a ship. Simple language would say that you will work on the deck of the ship, not with the engines.
In this course we have two major subjects namely Navigation and Seamanship. Navigation is more on calculation. We are taught how to calculate distances across the seas using different tools and formulas. We are also taught how to pinpoint your geographical location on the globe using heavenly bodies (sun, stars, moon). The rules of the road are also taught as well as the Laws of the sea in accordance to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations.
With Seamanship, the disciplines of a good seafarer is practiced. It is more on the behavior of the ship, cargo handling, maintenance, and maneuvering. We are taught how the ship would move on the water at different depths, how to do proper paint application, we are taught how and where to place the cargoes on the ship, and we are given techniques on how to stir the ship.
Regular students will be graduating as Associate graduates from the school and will leave the school to find their own way to the companies that will hire you as a deck cadet (trainee).
If you are persevered and had a shipping company, you will be an undergraduate student who will be on a ship on the 3rd year. There will be an allowance as you stay on a ship, this depends of course to the company you are in. You will then comeback on your fourth year to finish school and chances are, as you graduate, you will be absorbed by the company you have served with. Upon completion of the requirements then you will have acquired a BS MT diploma.
This is not an easy job. The ship and the sea requires a truck load of patience, hard work, perseverance, and courage. There are some things to do that you need to get dirty, use all your muscles and most of all your brain in analyzing situations. You need to be socially active to promote camaraderie to your work mates for every single day of you life, you will be boxed on a ship and you will see each other, work together throughout your contract.
Compared to engineering Maths, this course would look simple. But on a ship, on a multi-million dollar worth of vehicle and cargo carried that you are driving, every decision you make is worth a lot of money and the lives of your colleagues. Our subjects are complicated, but you need to know everything, health, environment, laws, physics, chemistry, math, analogy, social responsibility, etc. All because of what is at stake, life and money.
My current job: I am currently an officer trainee.
I have taken the exams for my license as a Officer in charge of a Navigational Watch. I will be learning the job of a 3rd Officer which is the maintenance of safety equipment on board, having a navigational watch and a deck watch (a watch during the loading/ unloading of cargo). If my superiors deem me worthy I will be recommended for a promotion to 3rd Officer.
Am I using what I learned in college: In great honesty, almost half of what I learned in school is rendered useless. Only the basics are learned in school: theories, origins, history, simple application. This is why the apprenticeship (OJT) is a very crucial part of your education. This is where you learn all the practicalities, new techniques, new equipment and the actual dealing with people and their different personalities.
How long did it take to find a job: Since I was a company sponsored scholar, after graduation, the office helped us financially with the board exams and absorbed us after completion of required documents for a seafarer.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes. If a person has a drive for success and he works hard, his chances in this industry is big. The entry on the companies will be the most difficult as to this requires patience, money and good attitude. But once you're in, the opportunities would present itself.
If you are accepted as a trainee on an internationally trading ship, you would get about php 22000 or more, depending on the company. Plus you will be visiting different places. One challenge though, "can you handle the home sickness and the waves of the sea?"
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: If you want to take this course, I suggest you ace the entrance exams and apply for a company sponsored scholarship, to ensure your future employment. You will need money for the additional training.
Your health should be in great standing. This course will test your will and your purpose. The job is never easy. As my teaches says, as your board your ship one of your foot is already on a grave.

About my college education: To start with, pursuing a maritime career is already one tough decision a fresh high school graduate could ever think of. Imagining one's self to be sailing the oceans miles away from home, facing the forces of nature like gushing wind & mountainous waves, could make an individual think twice whether or not this course is really fit for him. Despite all these, many students still get interested with it because, the Philippines, as one of the countries who provide major manpower abroad, this course is perfect for those who seek future financial freedom especially those who come from poor and middle class families. Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation is a very interesting and enjoyable course because it provides vast information and knowledge about Seamanship, Navigation, Marine Laws, and everything Maritime. It is also a challenging one because it requires special dedication, extra hard work, Math & problem solving skills, English skills, a good sense of camaraderie, and maintaining stability under pressure to succeed as a student of this course.
My current job: I am currently a Junior Third Officer.
Am I using what I learned in college: Everything I studied in college provided me enough knowledge which I use every time I am aboard the ship, especially Navigational problem solving, despite the advancement of today's technology.
How long did it take to find a job: I applied for Company sponsored scholarship upon entering JBLCF-Bacolod and by God's grace I passed and since then, I already have an employer that provided me a job upon graduation.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: I Highly recommend this course to those who are as of now, financially challenged individuals, who have the heart and dedication to work hard in order to reach their dreams and goals in life. This course has everything you need when you get through college, lots of employment opportunities, a fulfilling career, and high salary level.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: It is because the salary is so big that is why I have chosen this course. Many Filipino seafarers are needed today by shipping industries.
About my college education: We learned Seamanship, Marlaw, Chemistry, Math, Physics, Celestial Navigation, Marcom. All maritime studies. Swimming skills, plotting, familiarization of ships parts and function, and uses of machinery. Everything is useful.
The most difficult is Physics, it's more of equations and formulas. We have physics because some us will be boarding some chemical tanker ship so so we need to have knowledge and ideas about it.
Exams are hard but I passed so everyone can pass it. I advise to love your course and study it hard so once you are already on actual work, you'll already knowledgeable and can do the proper action.
My current job: I am a deck cadet and preparing to go on-board.
I am just waiting for the formal line up and schedule so I will be joining the ship.
Am I using what I learned in college: I learned how to navigate the ship and be aware of it's part and function. We have also problem solving like calculating the distance. We put it also in the plotting paper.
How long did it take to find a job: 10 months
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Recommended. Seaman today are rich because of large salaries. Many opportunities also if you are a graduate of maritime field. You can go to naval service and be a navy sailor if you cant find any company.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Love your work. Be industrious and polite because you'll be joining other crew nationalities on board. Trust yourself and be brave. Study every details about seamanship because it the only foundation that you can grips on in times of hardship.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: But what I really want is to travel and explore the world at the same time earning by doing it. And I think this is the course that suits for my dream. Also, with the motivation of my parents in accordance with my dreams, I was persuaded to study this particular course.
About my college education: What I learned in this course is how you must behave as a Seafarer where you must practice Practical Seamanship involving the conduct of vessel from one place to another without causing injury to anybody. Also is the care for the vessel you are into because it is your 2nd home abroad for the Seafarers.
For me, I had some difficulty with Seamanship Subjects but I still managed to have a good grades with it. After all, it's my course and I must be proficient on it.
The attitudes and traits you must have for you to succeed in this course is Perseverance, Honesty, Respect, Loyalty, and above all.. DISCIPLINE, because it is a way of life for a Seafarer.
My current job: Deck Cadet, a junior apprentice which is on board to practice and become a Future Deck Officer.
How long did it take to find a job: Before we graduate, Shipping companies were already taking cadets from our school to become part of their own, and fortunately I was one of those who had been taken.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: My advice is that "be yourself". No matter how many challenges you could encounter in studying this course, you must be patient and learn to overcome it. As the common quote says, "The Ship is safe at port, but the Ship is not built for that" therefore you must mold yourself for on the future you're voyaging the rough seas and exploring new places. You must be adaptable to any changes for you're not stationary to a certain place.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: I chose this course because I want to be captain of the ship someday. I want to travel the world and earn big money. And the course is easy compared to other.
About my college education: I have learn to be a seaman. The skills and discipline. I have learned to calculate time, speed, and distance of the ship, proper handling of maneuvering equipment, navigational problems, parts and function of the ship, some technical knowledge about seafaring work actually. Basic learning of swimming, survival on seas and also we have certificate for some practical like fire fighting and basic safety training.
For me the most difficult is seamanship and physics. These are math related subject whereas if you don't study hard, you will probably fails. Not to mention both subject have strict teachers compares to the some.
The most useful thing that I learn is being discipline and being reliable with just myself. Off course you need help from others but unless you're not helping your self like studying hard, you will not succeed. Swimming is also important that I learned because you can use it everywhere and in time of trouble.
The exams were ok. Just study hard. Not everyone can pass it if they study. But some have failed too because they didn't study hard. I have no classmate that shifted to other courses. This is course is the best of all so why should we shift and our parents have already invested more money on this.
Being disciplined is important. That's what the school is about. To have a discipline and have a competitive seafaring skills that meets the international expectation. Also you should be brave and hard working. Resourceful and be good to your fellow seaman inside the ship. Study hard also because after the learning inside the school comes the actual lessons outside your university. Be courteous also so that your seniors will like you.
My current job: I am right now working as office cadet.
This is part of my on the job training before the actual on-board in my company.
I get salary for this as an OJT. And the next month I will be waiting for the companies line up so that I can finally board on ship.
Am I using what I learned in college: The learning that I have learned from school that are very useful for my job right now are practicum for boat sailing in actual sea, swimming, usage of navigational equipment, basic safety and survival, and boat rowing in the sea, technical English that I used doing office work as a office cadet.
How long did it take to find a job: I actually rested and do the things I like for a year before I looked for the job.
Within 7 months I have already many companies, because I applied for every company that I can find thus giving me many option to chose from. But I was looking for a sure one, that gives a higher pay and great benefits. So finally I got this company.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes. I recommend it. High salary. Great benefits and the priviledges to work abroad and to tour around the world. Also meeting beautiful ladies everywhere.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: My advice is to study hard and never stop learning. Never stop dreaming because someday you will become the captain of your ship.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: For a youth like me who has a strong spirit of adventure and vigor to explore new horizons, it is a profession that offers countless of opportunities. To travel the world for free and earn a salary more than what can be earned on land is a great way to support my family, create a business that will help many people and serve the Philippines through remittances that further bolster the country's economic growth and stability. Seeing places also offers golden memories, long-lasting friendship with other nationalities onboard and ashore and life-changing experiences that makes one a better and stronger person. Seafaring also opens up a universe of opportunities in other fields. It is also a chance for me as a Filipino to show our good values, culture and our great potential to achieve greater heights as a people.
About my college education: Lessons were taught in clear, precise and applicable to life situation manner. The books we've used and modern equipment at the university, have given us a clear perspective on the life onboard the ship. Examinations were administered in an orderly, easy and computer-checked manner. The semi-military culture of the university have instilled positive core values to attain progress and uphold dignity at work considering the uniqueness of the maritime profession which requires the highest degree of leadership, resilience, discipline and integrity. In my case, I've became part of the Norwegian Shipowners Association - Philippines Cadet Program with a 2-1-1 scheme. When I've went onboard as a deck cadet, which many have said as the most difficult part of our course, I've greatly appreciated the importance of my lessons and the way we were trained at the university. It has prepared and trained me to be competent and responsible in performing the tasks assigned to me. I was able to apply most of my learnings and earned the trust of my colleagues.
My current job: I am a seafarer with an Officer-in-Charge of Navigational Watch (OIC-NW) license which I have recently passed. On the previous years, I have worked as a Deck Cadet. As the first step towards becoming a ship officer, a deck cadet trains in the fields of navigation, ship-handling and cargo handling and maritime law as well as oceanography, meteorology and marine engineering.
Currently, I am taking all my trainings to complete my Certificate of Competency (COC) which is a prerequisite to act as a Third Officer onboard the ship. The Third Officer, aside from conducting the ship safely at sea and cargo operations at port during his 0800H - 1200H / 2000H - 2400H watch, is also designated as the Safety Officer and is responsible for the periodical maintenance of all life saving and fire fighting equipment. He is also sometimes given the tasks in updating statutory documents of the ship required by authorities of different countries. The third officer has special responsibilities to keep the ship, the people on board and the environment safe. This includes keeping the ship seaworthy during fire and loss of stability, and providing aid and maintaining safety during man overboard, abandoning ship, and medical emergencies. Understanding ship's stability, trim, stress, and the basics of ship's construction is a key to keeping a ship seaworthy.
The third officer must know what to do in cases of flooding and loss of buoyancy and must be expert in the use of survival craft and rescue boats, their launching appliances and arrangements, and their equipment including radio life-saving appliances, satellite Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRBs), Search and Rescue Radar Transponder (SARTs), immersion suits and thermal protective aids. In case it is necessary to abandon ship, it is important to be expert in the techniques for survival at sea techniques. He is also trained to perform medical tasks and to follow instructions given by Radio Medical Advice Center ashore or obtained from guides which includes what to do in case of common shipboard accidents and illnesses.
Am I using what I learned in college: When I've went onboard as a deck cadet, which many have said as the most difficult part of our course, I've greatly appreciated the importance of my lessons and the way we were trained at the university. It has prepared and trained me to be competent and responsible in performing the tasks assigned to me. I was able to apply most of my learnings and earned the trust of my colleagues. With the lessons which has been taught to me and the good values, discipline, resilience and integrity, I've surpassed the challenges and exceeded the expectations. Until now, I continue to put all the lessons and values I have learned in my heart for I know that these will take me farther in this profession and to whatever I will venture tomorrow.
How long did it take to find a job: It did not took me a difficult time finding an employment after graduation. With the strong linkages and outstanding performance of JBLFMU and increasing demand of maritime manpower, many shipping companies and organizations select their cadets before the start of freshmen classes. Taking a series of written and computer-based examinations and interviews, armed with robust commitment to enter the seafaring profession, I became a part of Norwegian Shipowners Association - Philippines Cadet Program with a 2-1-1 scheme (two years academic studies, one year cadetship onboard the ship and another year for academic studies).
I did not spend even a single centavo for my tuition and miscellaneous fees during my two years at the university, I was able to board a worldwide seagoing vessel during my third year to where I have saved enough for my senior year. After graduation, I've taken the examination for my license and the company continued to offer me employment.
For cadets who were not part of company programs, many of them were easily hired by companies after graduation. JBLFMU has linkages that include 165 shipping companies, both international and domestic that makes it a force in the maritime industry as a provider of excellent seafarers worldwide. With the growing demand of seafarers from foreign companies which prefers Filipinos for the quality and excellence in performing their duties and responsibilities, it is not really hard to obtain a job. They key is to invest well in learning their lessons, both theoretically and practical.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: I strongly recommend this course to the youth mainly because of employment opportunities and possibilities that it could offer. Filipino seafarers account for 30% of all seafarers deployed in the international shipping and it continues to grow as more foreign companies choose Filipinos to man their vessels.
The salary is competitive, higher than those of land-based jobs and at par or even higher with those of managerial jobs. Some companies even offer basic salaries to their officers when in vacation. Seeing the world for free, gaining friends, learning other cultures and showing to the world what Filipinos can do and achieve makes the profession even more rewarding.
The seafaring profession may be very difficult in the beginning, but because I have taken it romantically and I have been thoroughly honed and I know that God is always with me, there is no challenge that I can overcome. What makes me love and be proud of my profession is the fact that seafaring is very crucial in the existence of the global economy and it's continuous growth and accounts only for 3% of greenhouse gas emission. To serve our family, the Philippines and the global population, is more than enough for me to call this profession noble and fulfilling.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Influenced by my family and relatives. They told me that if I proceeded with this course I would have a bright future and I would have a very good career ahead of me because of the in demand jobs nowadays.
About my college education: When I was studying it was fun and enjoyable because I met many friends and also lot of experiences and I find my course very interesting. One of the reasons was we were taught how to navigate the ship, locating our location, and many things.
The skill I acquired is how to manage your time because when you navigate a ship or locate your position you must finish it just a minute because every second counts.
The attitude I got is that we have to be responsible and to be a leader in our own ways because someday we will be a captain and we will manage our own crew and ship.
My current job: My current position is a deck cadet.
I am an apprentice that will be trained by the officers and crews to be someday become a competitive seafarer.
Am I using what I learned in college: I have used the lessons I've learned in our school. Even though it was basic that school taught us it was still useful because it gives me ideas when it comes to actual event. I used the navigational skills and knowledge. It was the most common and the most needed when we are actually on board the ship.
How long did it take to find a job: It took me 11 months before I found a job. It was not that easy to find a suitable job for me and it required a lot of effort.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: The employment opportunities in our area are not so good, because you must be determined to apply to every single shipping agency before you can find a job.
The salary of a seafarer is bigger than an ordinary worker and you could have a better life.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: My advice to all the people who are interested in our course is just learn the basics and study well. Grab every opportunity that will come to you. And also enjoy every moment that while you are still a student.

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: Because of the opportunity that it provides. And also the challenge and excitement that this particular course offers.
About my college education: During my school day I can say that I've learned a lot of new things from my professors especially in the field of maritime education. Definition and terms are one of the best example we have our own term for left and right, toilet, ceiling and many more terminologies'. Subjects were all difficult for me, those with crazy calculation, best example is knowing you position using celestial bodies. But those are the most useful things I've learned. Passing that is the most difficult thing to do in this course.
My current job: A sailor, but with the safety equipment maintenance added. To be exact imagine a man driving a motor boat. In my case multiply the size of that boat by thousand times.
Am I using what I learned in college: Swimming is the best thing, cause in this job one wrong move you will have to use that knowledge. And steering, yes we do steering thousand of tons of metal and learning to steer is the best thing to learn.
How long did it take to find a job: Two months.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: Yes, I would recommend this course. Jobs are everywhere, and it's not stock on just going out to sea you can also be an instructor.
The salary for starters is 20 thousand pesos, but you'll be multiplying that by 5 or seven afterwards and you can also earn a good salary as a part timer if ever you want to work during your vacation. So to sum it up the opportunity is great for this course.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: Thinks twice before taking the course. if you're interest is not in the course I suggest not to take it. And make sure that you are ready to face the unexpected. Schooling is so much easier that the actual thing.

Why did I choose : I wanted to travel to so many places outside of the Philippines. This a course that help me go sailing to other foreign countries.
About my college education: The apprenticeship after the 3rd year helped me get an actual trip to Far East Asia in a cargo ship of Magsaysay Lines, Inc.
There was not much studying of math in this course. The major is towards learning to be living and working in a ship.
The important trait here is to be obedient to the superiors and to be diligent in the daily work.
My current job: I am working on a contractual basis for a cargo ship that travels in Far East Asia only. I am doing various jobs like cleaning, helping in the kitchen, or the laundry.
How long did it take to find a job: In our school, right after the 3rd year, a student has to go on a 1-year actual apprenticeship in a vessel with pay by the flag carrier. Immediately after graduation, I had already a job waiting for me. The job was the same job I became an apprentice.
Do I recommend studying : I recommend this course although it does not pay much. My job pays U.S. $300 a month only. But if one continues further studies and takes the Board Exam for seafaring, then he would get paid much higher as an officer.
Advice to people who are thinking of studying this course: For those desiring to take this course, it might be good only for those who have money for the officers’ course so that he be promoted to the rank of an officer.

About my college education: The course BS Marine Transportation is dedicated in providing an in depth and thorough study in the field of Maritime Studies ranging from Maritime wildlife, Geographic composition and structures of different bodies of water from different countries/places, astrological structures, Parts of a vessel, Maritime Engineering, Maneuvering a ship/vessel, and a lot more.
A student must possess typical skills required from an individual with immeasurable amount of dedication, motivation, perseverance, eagerness, creativity, understanding, resourcefulness, diligence, and a lot more. But in order for a student to succeed in this field or profession, one must learn how to become a very good problem solver, analytical and logical thinker and able to think out of the box beyond reasonable grounds, open-minded, willing to learn new things and can easily adapt to his/her environment. This will surely bring out the best in anyone who wish for becoming successful mariner.
My current job: Senior Analyst for an American HR, payroll, benefits and taxation solution center. I did not pursue this career due to the fact that I really didn’t want to become a seafarer – I was just left with no other choice but to take up this field just to finish schooling.
Am I using what I learned in college: Since I’m in a different field, the technical aspect of my learning does not apply. Hence the other skills I acquired, that’s where I focused on developing them.
How long did it take to find a job: The profession that I’m in doesn’t take me that long in getting a job. But my colleagues (who also took the same field/course) took them about a year or so before they ended up having a job – and it’s a contractual based kind of profession which only lasts for about a couple of months.
Do I recommend studying Marine Transportation: No. Such course, based on experience (since my father is also a seafarer) is causing a lot of psychological impact against an individual’s being. The vices are becoming intolerable and are exposing so much impact on ones being. Furthermore, the financial benefits may provide satisfaction however, this does not suffice the fulfillment a person requires.
