Cris here! As you know I have been trying recipes throughoutGooseberry Patch’s newChristmas at Grandma’sand today’s recipe isCrock Pot Red Roast. I was immediately curious about this roast because it involves one of my favorite food groups– ketchup!

Yep, that’s right, ketchup is the base for this yummy roast and it makes a red tinted gravy that is quite yummy over some mashed taters… (Need some mashed potato recipes? We got you covered!

That may sound odd, but when it was cooking, that was totally what I was thinking. The tomatoey sauce has a reminder of meatloaf. We are huge meatloaf fans (cue… I would do ANYTHING for love… get it 😉 ), so this was a great roast for us.

A Few Notes:

  • If your roast is not tender enough, cook it longer. Roasts do best when they cook until they fall apart easily with a fork. If it isn’t falling apart, cook it longer.
  • I cooked this up withmy favorite general use 6 qt slow cooker, but you could use any slow cooker that your roast will fit in.
  • I have not tried this with other roast cuts, but I am sure it would be great with a good chuck roast.

I love your recipes! If I want to add vegetables – carrots, potatoes, etc. – when would I do that? I’m guessing the more dense varieties at the beginning and the more delicate at the end?

    Thanks so much!

      Hi Kathy!
I would add potatoes and carrots at the beginning. If you don’t like the texture of onions and celery after they cook all day, you could add them about half way through.

      Enjoy!

Renae did you stop to think that maybe some recipes need to have instructions specified for some people that may be new to cooking. Lots of us have been cooking for years but as a newbie, I probably would have appreciated all the details. Now I just read over and do my own thing. I appreciate all the effort it takes to keep up with these blogs. I know I couldn’t do it!
Great recipe by the way!!!Can’t wait to try it!

Who kicked your cat? And do you really think she cares if you leave her site! Keep doing what your doing! Your site is great!

And Renee clearly has lost HER mind. This is what happens when you hand out YOUR recipes for free. First they correct YOUR writing. Then they think you’ll actually be disappointed when they unsubscribe from YOUR free website because of YOUR reckless abandon with possessive adjectives. As if THEIR opinion matters. Move along Renee. Move along. I think there is a free coupon site out there that is just waiting on you to come correct their excessive usage of personal pronouns.

Do you really need to constantly specify whose flour, whose roast, whose crock pot, etc.? This repetitiousness is so annoying. Sorry, just needed to say something. I love the recipes, but constantly have to keep changing every one that I might even want to save. And, for this reason, I plan to unsubscribe from your site.

Create a paste with YOUR flour and water
Spread your paste all over YOUR roast
Sprinkle YOUR roast generously with salt and pepper and place in YOUR crock pot
Place YOUR sliced onions all over YOUR roast
    Put your catsup all over
Add water to YOUR crock pot until it comes halfway up YOUR roast
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours
Take YOUR roast out and put on a serving platter, let it rest for several minutes and slice
Serve over mashed potatoes and top with YOUR gravy

Okay, now that was funny. I’ve never seen someone with their tinsel in such a tizzy over such a minor detail – and wow, how rude she is. I didn’t realize the world was supposed to bow down to one person’s preference to such an extreme, but apparently this is the case with Renee.
In cases like this we just need to be grateful that we don’t have to live with Renee, as I cannot possibly imagine what it would be like to be in HER home each day. Even with HER roast and HER gravy and HER mashed potatoes, I would not want to be sitting at THAT table. Can we all just pray for HER family?

FAQs

Should pot roast be covered in liquid in crock pot? ›

You don't actually need to add much water. The roast will release liquid as it cooks and in a crock pot, none of the liquid 'boils away' or evaporates. Use enough liquid (water, or whatever you like) to cover the bottom of the crockpot and that is probably plenty.

Is it better to cook a roast on high or low in a crock pot? ›

Season roast with a good amount of salt and pepper and sear on all sides until browned (about 5-6 minutes each side). Transfer roast to the bowl of a 6-quart slow cooker. Add in all remaining ingredients and cook on low 8 hours. The meat will be so tender and falling apart, and the vegetables soft.

How do you keep a roast moist in a crock pot? ›

Make sure you have enough liquid to add to the slow cooker. Depending on the recipe you are making this could be - water, broth, beer, stock or a combination of a few. Liquid helps keep the roast moist. When finished, the extra liquid can be discarded or can be used to make a sauce by thickening it or reducing it.

How do you thicken gravy in a crock pot roast? ›

After your pot roast is done cooking, you may want to thicken the gravy. The easiest way to do this is to stir in a cornstarch slurry during the last hour of slow cooking time. You'll combine two tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of water in a small bowl and stir until smooth.

Should vegetables go on top or bottom of pot roast? ›

By placing the protein at the bottom (closest to the heating element), and vegetables at the top, you can keep your plant parts a little more toothsome, while ensuring your meat is fall-apart tender.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in CrockPot? ›

Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top. Set the heat level: A general rule of thumb is that cooking on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) takes about twice as long as cooking on high (280 degrees F on most models).

When should I add potatoes to pot roast? ›

Cover and cook for 3 hours, or until the roast is very tender. Add the carrots and potatoes to the pot when there's about an hour of cooking time left, turning the roast over when you do. To serve, spoon any excess fat off the surface and slice or shred the beef to serve with the veggies, drizzled with sauce.

When should I add my potatoes to crock pot roast? ›

During the last 45 minutes of cooking, turn the slow cooker temperature to High and add carrots and potatoes submerging them in the cooking liquid as much as possible. Continue to cook until vegetables are tender, about 30-40 minutes.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low? ›

A general rule of thumb from Luis Sanchez, senior category manager for the appliance manufacturer Breville: To go from "High" to "Low" (or vice versa), multiply (or divide) the original time by 1.5 to 2.5 hours. And as with the cooking times for specific ingredients, these times are approximate.

Should I flip my roast in crock pot? ›

There is no need to flip meat in a crock pot.

Why is my roast still tough after 6 hours? ›

So if you cut the pot roast into chunks and stew it, or if you cook the roast in beef stock (flipping halfway through), and you cook it long enough, it will eventually fall apart. If your pot roast is still tough after cooking for 6 hours in a crock pot, it's possible that it simply needs more time to cook.

Why are my potatoes still hard in the crockpot? ›

Insufficient Liquid: If there wasn't enough liquid in the crockpot, it could have caused uneven cooking. Potatoes need to be fully submerged in liquid to cook evenly. Old Potatoes: Very old or stored potatoes can become starchy and may not soften as well during cooking. It's best to use fresh, firm potatoes.

How do you thicken gravy in a crock pot without cornstarch? ›

Add a slurry at the end.

A slurry is a mixture of flour and water, whisked together until smooth and added towards the end of cooking; it's a super-simple way to thicken any soup. For slow cooker soups, add your slurry with at least 30 minutes of cook time left so that the raw flour can cook and thicken the soup.

Why does gravy go watery in slow cooker? ›

This moist environment allows you to leave food to cook for hours without risking it drying out. But because there is no evaporation, the liquid isn't able to reduce and thicken naturally in a slow cooker, often resulting in watery sauces and loose gravies. The common solution? Using a thickener.

How long does gravy take to thicken in slow cooker? ›

Add the cornflour mix to the gravy and stir until it's combined. Cook on HIGH for about 15 minutes or until thickened.

Does meat in crock pot need to be covered with liquid? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

How much liquid should cover a pot roast? ›

Put the roast in the pot; the water should come only about 1 inch up the sides of the meat. Reduce the heat so the liquid is simmering, not boiling, and cover the pot tightly with the lid so meat braises.

Should roast be submerged in liquid? ›

When slow cooking a roast, it is not necessary to fully submerge it in water. In fact, using too much liquid can result in a soggy and diluted flavor. However, it is important to have some liquid in the cooking process to keep the roast moist and tender.

Is too much liquid in pot roast bad? ›

The dissolving gelatin and juices from the meat are what make the pot roast sauce so delicious, and too much liquid at the start means a diluted sauce with less silky mouthfeel and rich flavor. Remember that the meat and any veggies in the pot will also add to the liquid volume.
